Physico-chemical properties and bacterial flora of the cervical mucus in normal fertile and repeat breeder Friesian dairy cows

Abstract
Background: Present study was conducted to compare the serum and cervical mucus(CM) concentrations of glucose, some macro and micro-minerals as well as enzymes like Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and α-amylase in fertile (G1) and repeat breeder(G2) cows on the day of heat. Types of bacterial isolates from CM of fertile and repeat breeder (RB) cows were also studied.
Methods: Thirty Friesian cows, 20 fertile and 10 RB (received >3 AI and had turbid CM) were selected for study.
Results: There was an increase (P<0.01) in the concentration of Mg and α- amylase and a decrease in the concentration (P<0.01) of Zn, K and LDH in the CM of G2 compared with G1.Whereas, serum profile showed an increase (P<0.01) in K and α- amylase and in the Mg(P<0.05) and decease(P<0.01) in Zn, Cu and Na in G2 compared with G1. Bacteria were isolated from 7 out of 20 fertile and from all RB cows. E.coli, α hemolytic Streptococci and Pseudomonas spp. were isolated only from CM of RB cows indicating their possible role in causing reproductive problem.
Conclusion: It may be concluded that the increase of Mg α-amylase and decrease of Zn, K and LDH concentrations in CM as well as the increase in K and α- amylase and the decrease in Zn, Cu and Na in the serum along with bacteriological investigation of blood and CM on the day of heat have a predictive value in diagnosis of RB cows.
